GT40 Versions

Ford GT40 Mk I (1965)

  • Powered by Ford 289 (4.7 litre) V8 engine mated to ZF 5-speed transmission.

  • Induction system: 4 x Weber 48 IDA carburettors.

  • Built on steel monocoque chassis with fibre glass body panels.

  • Power output was approximately 390 bhp.

  • Initially fitted with Borrani wire wheels, these were later changed to magnesium alloy wheels.

  • Weight at scrutineering: 2440 lbs.

  • Mk I eventually won at Le Mans in 1968 and 1969 (Gulf GT40s).

  • Top speed: 200 mph.

Ford GT40 Mk II (1966)

  • Powered by Ford 427 (7.0 litre) V8 mated to Ford 4-speed transmission. 

  • Induction system: 1 x (later 2 x) Holley 4V carburettor.

  • Based on standard monocoque chassis but with additional strengthening.

  • Power output was approximately 485 bhp.

  • Fitted with Halibrand alloy wheels.

  • Weight at scrutineering: 2670 lbs.

  • Mk II won at Le Mans in 1966.

  • Top speed: 215 mph.


Ford GT40 Mk III (1967)

  • Powered by Ford 289 Hi-Po V8 engine (although some cars had a 302 V8).

  • Induction system: 1 x Holley (or Autolite) 4V carburettor.

  • Steel monocoque chassis with foam insulation in some cavities.

  • Power output was 306 bhp.

  • Reverted back to Borrani wire wheels.

  • Weight: 2700 lbs.

  • Purely a road car and was not raced.

  • Top speed: 164 mph.

Ford GT40 Mk IV (1967)

  • Radically different chassis made of aluminium honey- comb panels bonded together.

  • Powered by Ford 427 V8.

  • Induction system: 1 or 2 Holley 4V carburettors.

  • Power output was approximately 500 bhp.

  • Weight at scrutineering: 2650 lbs.

  • Won at Le Mans in 1967.

  • Top speed: 230 mph.

Ford GT40 Mk I (Gulf-1968/1969)

  • Powered by Ford 289 V8 with Gurney-Weslake cylinder heads.
  • Engine capacity later increased to 5.0 litres.
  • Induction system: 4 x Weber 48 IDA carburettors.
  • Based on standard monocoque but with aluminium roof structure.
  • Body panels reinforced with carbon fibre.
  • Power output was approximately 425 bhp.
  • Fitted with 6-spoke magnesium alloy wheels.
  • Weight at scrutineering: 2469 lbs.
  • Won at Le Mans in 1968 and 1969.
  • Top speed: 210 mph.
